As with any Religious film, there will always be an overwhelming amount of opinions. The movie “Heaven is For Real” is no exception. This movie was based the true events that took place in a suburban Nebraska town. Minister Todd Burpo held many different hats. He was not only a preacher, but a volunteer Fire Fighter, a wrestling coach and garage door installer.
The story begins when Burpo’s son Colton becomes ill. He’s requires emergency surgery. While having surgery, he encounters a near death experience. After recovering the Colton begins to reveal detailed accounts of what he claims was a trip to heaven. These details were so shocking to his parents because they were things that were never told to him. Details about things his parents were doing while he was in surgery and events that took place before he was born.
As Burpo began to share his sons accounts, the very faith he has preached comes not only into question with people of the town, but within himself. Burpo doesn’t know if he should believe in the fact that Heaven is For Real. As his son continues to give more detailed account of his visits with Jesus, Angels and various deceased family members that were in heaven, his family and people of the town think this little boy is crazy.
As a movie goer knowing this movie is somewhat based off true events, it gives you a chance to evaluate your own beliefs in God and the facts of Heaven being fiction or real. The bible clearly states in Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding, also in Romans 12:2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
Faith is what we are asked to have in God, with that faith know that anything is possible. Know one really knows if the little boy went to Heaven, but the idea of having a first account description of what heaven looks like is hopefully to those that inspire to one day reach it.
